17 May Teenage Portraits in Edinburgh, Carmen & Lukas
Lifestyle Teenage Portraits in Edinburgh
Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Victoria Mallon from Edinburgh asked me recently to take some photographs for her portfolio. The two models – teenage brother and sister Carmen and Lukas – are used to being in front of the camera. The session was planned for a Saturday in February, a rainy and stormy winter’s day, so we decided to take the photos at their home. Secret lighting technician, the Stig, was with me, and we created some amazing images.
I often get asked if I find it difficult to take photos of teenagers. Actually, no! I think teenagers are fabulous in front of the camera. I love creating amazing teenage portraits! By the time a child has grown up to be 13, 14, 15, 16 years old, they have developed their own personality and this is the time to shine, to let it out, to let them be who they are, or who they want to become.
The difficulty often is that mum and dad want to see them looking young and innocent, whereas the teenager, be it a 13-year old, or 16-year old – they want to look older, mature, and cool. The best way to take these images is to let them be themselves. No instructions, no requests to smile for the camera (that’s not allowed in my sessions anyway!). Let your child translate their own version of “cool”, “edgy”, “grown-up” into the photos we create. I work with the teenager and together we create some amazing photographs which will make the teenager and the parents proud!
