They say "the days are long, but the years are short". We live in such a fast world these days and kids grow up what feels like over night! I remember the day I held my nephew in my arms for the first time, when he was only 3 weeks young. And now he's starting to walk! Where's the last year gone?
Whether it is for an important milestone in your family's life, or you just want to capture your family unit in some stunning photographs - there is always the right time to book a photo session.
A family photography session can take anything between 1 hour to 3 hours - depending on your kids' energy and your own ideas too.
Children are sometimes lost in their own little world, discovering their environment - which makes for magic photo opportunities!
In family portraits, I love to show the family unit, together, doing things they normally do. Portraying their real life, in real situations. When I join a family on a day out, children can explore the surroundings naturally, they can become engrossed with a flower, or simply have some "dream time". Sometimes I create little scenes, but I would use props from their own lives, such as their favourite teddybear, that makes the family remember this particular time in their lives.
When I look back at my own family photos, I remember the things in them, what I used to do, where I used to go. Down to the little river, watching the fish and throwing pebbles in the water, getting wet. Running across the field, or gowing for a walk with our dog. You will have your own memories - why not have them captured by me. Let me join you, and come up with an amazing selection of photos that make you remember this special time in your life!
The one thing to bear in mind is NOT to dress up your children as if they were going to a wedding. The whole idea behind a family photo session is to have fun, jump puddles, and throw leaves.
I would encourage you to ask your children to pick 2 or 3 of their favourite outfits and let them put their favourite one on to start with. If that happens to be the T-Shirt with the dinosaur on it - that's fine. We can change into a plain one later for the big family portrait.
Shoes - wellies or trainers, anything that will allow them to run through the grass and potentially a puddle.
Ask your children to bring ONE favourite toy with them. If the children are very young, this will give them comfort, and it's also a reminder on that teddybear he used to carry about aged 4 :)
For the parents - wear smart casual clothing, try and have some bright colours in your clothing as this will make for amazing photographs. Most importantly, wear something that will make you feel good and that will allow you to walk on grass and clothes that allow you to hold on to your kids and let them jump up in the air, while holding your hand.
